Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about buying, installing and maintaining air conditioning in Australia.

Buying

What size air conditioner do I need?

The right size depends on your room dimensions, insulation, window area and climate zone. As a general guide, you need roughly 120 to 150 watts of cooling capacity per square metre. Use our free AC Size Calculator for a personalised recommendation.

What is the difference between a split system and a ducted system?

A split system has one indoor unit and one outdoor unit, ideal for cooling a single room or open-plan area. A ducted system uses concealed ducts in your ceiling to distribute air throughout the entire home from a single central unit. Ducted systems cost more upfront but offer whole-home comfort.

Which air conditioning brand is best in Australia?

Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Panasonic are consistently top-rated for Australian conditions. Each brand has strengths in different areas. We can help you choose the best option for your specific needs and budget.

How much does a new air conditioner cost?

Prices vary depending on the type and capacity. A quality split system typically ranges from $1,500 to $4,000 installed. Ducted systems start from around $8,000 for a basic setup. We provide free, no-obligation quotes so you know the full cost upfront.

Installation

How long does installation take?

A standard split system installation takes 3 to 5 hours. Ducted system installations typically take 1 to 3 days depending on the size of your home and the complexity of the ductwork.

Do I need council approval to install air conditioning?

In most residential cases, you do not need council approval for a standard air conditioning installation. However, some councils have noise or placement restrictions for outdoor units, especially in unit complexes. We check local requirements as part of our quoting process.

Are your installers licensed?

Yes. Every technician in our network holds a current electrical licence and refrigerant handling licence as required by Australian law. We verify all credentials before any technician joins our network.

Servicing and Repairs

How often should I service my air conditioner?

We recommend a professional service at least once a year, ideally before summer. Regular servicing extends the life of your unit, improves efficiency and catches small issues before they become expensive repairs.

Why is my air conditioner not cooling properly?

Common causes include dirty filters, low refrigerant levels, a faulty compressor or blocked condenser coils. Start by cleaning your filters. If the problem persists, book a repair service and our technicians will diagnose the issue.

Do you offer emergency repair services?

Yes. We offer priority repair services in most major metro areas. Call us directly to arrange a same-day or next-day appointment.

Costs and Savings

How much does it cost to run an air conditioner?

Running costs depend on the unit size, energy rating, electricity tariff and how often you use it. A typical 2.5kW split system costs around $0.30 to $0.50 per hour to run. Use our Running Cost Estimator for a personalised calculation.

What energy star rating should I look for?

Look for at least a 3-star rating for reasonable efficiency. Higher-rated units (5 stars or above) cost more upfront but save significantly on electricity over the life of the unit. Inverter models are generally more efficient than non-inverter models.
